Sniff Petrol lurches into the early 21st century!

Hello there, and welcome to the prototype for Sniff Petrol MkII. You see, someone told me that doing blogs is all very fashionable and, whilst Sniff Petrol isn’t one to jump on bandwagons – even ones from 2004 – but the truth is that the normal SP-making computer seems to have broken and that’s as good an excuse as any for making a change to the way this site is made.

As an added bonus, without the usual day of fiddling about with a rubbish layout programme and swearing quite a lot, there’s every chance that Sniff Petrol will be updated more frequently. As long as you remember that the phrase ‘every chance’ is essentially meaningless and probably means ‘not a hope and you’ll just get some new shit every six weeks or so, as ever’.

STOP INTERNET PRESS: Thanks to everyone who's been in touch so far; from your e-mails, it sounds like the whole blog thing is generally a good idea. And don't worry, the mock ads and the Schumacher brothers thing will continue. In fact, they might be back brighter, faster, stronger, longer and with 30 percent more cheesey topping because long time Sniff Petrol fan, web company boss and all round top bloke Dave Coveney has been in touch offering to sort the entire blog properly by using software that wasn't engineered by special needs lemurs. It might take slightly longer but we think it'll be worth it.

That is all. For now.

Sniff

Wotcha

I thought Blogger had so-called 'templates' that could do the sidebar wotsit. And something's wrong with the character set somewhere - your smart quotes are turning into weird stuff.

I'd prefer this extremely orange site to remain as it is rather than move to smaller, more frequent updates. Makes it feel like i'm getting a car mag and I like that seeing as I have stopped buying them.

It's a bit like a Mercedes facelift. Probably not necessary, changed a bit more than you think it has and just that little bit more ugly.

I've been waiting because I wanted to be the 4th person to comment.
I look forward to the regular updates, that may not end up being that regular, with baited breath.

Wonderful idea. However the copy I'm looking at is full of strange characters (and not just the writing).
Mind you, I am using a hideous piece of sh*t Mac running the even sh*tter Safari browser program, so feel free to ignore this.....

Hi

Speaking as a motorsport web-satirist whose site has always operated on the basis of updates being (very) little but (not very) often, and has therefore always been slightly envious of Sniff's apparently organised deadline-oriented culture, I wish you the best of luck.

As the great man said "I love deadlines; it's the whooshing noise they make as they go by."

Just keep up the excellent work with the Schumacher vs Schumacher pics.

All the best,

What?
You mean I've gotta start checking for updates every couple of days instead of once every month (or two)?
Bloody Hell! I have a bed to lie in.
Keep the good stuff coming.

What you need is a clever we designer person to do your site for you.

Have you tried Jenson Button? I've no idea what he's doing these days but he might need a job.

Re: Weird characters

Safari isn't picking the right encoding for the page, it assumes default but should be UTF8.

View -> Text Encoding -> Unicode (UTF8)

should make those accented characters readable again. I can't remember whether Safari remembers this new setting or not.

@Paul - no. I'm in Aus, but I'm a Pommie Bastard. And thanks for the UTF-8 hint, it looks better now.

Since the SP blog is still in development, might I suggest that you Wordpress instead of Blogger, which is a pile of rubbish in comparison.

Wordpress allows you to have persistent pages (for buying crazy dave t-shirts etc) as well as the usual blog style posts. A quick search on Google will bring up lots of other reasons why.

The only hard part will be getting someone to do a Sniff Petrol template for Wordpress, but then you did it for Blogger.

Rant aside, having a blog is a great idea:)

...and as if you didn't have enough to do, what about some sniffpetrol car stickers?? they would be cool, what with Le Mans 'n' all coming up, and I could stick one on the lawnmower too...

Superb. Loved the site as it was, but thing the new blog version will be better. Anyone running Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox will be able to set RSS bookmarks for ANY blog site. So the RSS functionality is already there. Any RSS reader can also read blog sites.
Keep up the good work.
Another watching from Australia (but I'm not a pommie!)

RSS? Safari? UTF8? What the hell's going on? One minute it's a slanted view of the motor industry and motorsport, the next it's turned into an IT forum. Whatever that is.
Anyway, what was comment 4, before it was untimely ripped from these shortly-to-be-hallowed pages? Intrigue too, this is all too much for this simpleton.

FFS!! I typed a fantastic, Booker Prize message then had to 'join'? Anyway, my woe: another flaming blog? Come on? I remember a time when Sniff provided columns that could be read and only read and no comments were required!Who actually wants to read what we have to say??!
I hope the 'cack myself' funny adverts remain!
Blackstig
Who will be a 'slave to the Sniff' and continue to read anyway.

I like the idea of little and often rather than once a month (as I said to the wife)
Get on with it then!

Could you include lots of pictures of naked women in this blog please?

That way I won't have to delete my browser history so often.

Cheers,
BigJim.

Will the new Sniff Petrol release more CO2 into the atmosphere than before?

I hope so. I like the sun.

Keep up the good work - I'll love SP in whatever format it comes in, so long as it always comes with chips.
